Caroline Correa was an extraoridinary women. Born on the
Big Island of Hawaii in the district of Ka'u she was Half Hawaiian,
Half German but brought up in the old ways of her Hawaiian
people. At the age of nine her family moved to Honolulu where
more work could be found and this is where she learned the art of
Hawaiian quilting. Between 1901 - 1940 Caroine Correa not only made
Hawaiian quilts but she was also a Hawaiian quilt designer. Her
home became the Quilting Bee of North School Street. She also
travelled to Kaua'i, Hawaii, and especially Maui
to visit family and friends where she quilted and exchanged patterns. During the 1940's
Caroline Correa like all other quilters stopped quilting because of the
war and Caroline was happy to be passing her time by raising her grandchildren, especially
Poakalani. In the later 1950's early 1960's Caroline became
active in demonstrating quilting to the tourist in Waikiki and sharing
some of her original designs. After her passing in 1968 she left
her collection to her grand-daughter Poakalani. Today we would
like to share with you some of her designs and well as her
collection.
